Don’t Just Stand Still and Look Pretty – Perform!

It’s funny how as I work with more models – some with no experience and some with more experience I’m noticing that some of my models just stand there and look pretty.

Don’t get me wrong 99% of the time that works and makes some great shots. But when a model performs and gets way into the mood of the shoot or concept you don’t end up with great shots, you end up with amazing shots!

  • Just Because!
  • Your computer is less likely to die if you have a backup (Murphy’s Law)
  • Redundancy is your friend
  • Hard drives die – all the time
  • It takes over night to do a solid backup – it takes between 3-5 days to find out that you can’t recover anything from a dead hard drive.

Location, location, location – Finding the right locations for your shoots!

When I first started shooting people I went out and bought myself a snazzy background stand and a background, another flash, a stand, more umbrellas then had a great mini-movable studio. I also had ‘creepy’ written all over it.

The problem with equipment and a home studio is that if you want a model to come to your home you need to step back and think about how awkward that may be for them, yea awkward huh? If you don’t have access to a professional studio don’t despair, there’s plenty of fantastic outdoor locations right down the street from you, literally – it’s all about looking at everything as a potential photo shoot location.

Practicing Facial Expressions – Pre-Shoot Tips for Models

I often work with new models, usually women whom are testing the water to see if modeling is something they’d like to pursue or something they can have fun doing and eventually earning some extra income from.

It’s hard for a photographer to work with new models because of the extra amount of direction they typically require so I’ve put together this list to give out to a few of my new models to help them prepare for their upcoming shoot.
